was on the way home from tennis and car died on me. lost power steering, car stopped charging and 3-4 lights turned on just to rub it in that something is F*cked. got onto the phone to racq and the guy said yeh become a member for $198 a year and you get a fre service tonight for 10km, yay.... on the plus side though a guy who i didnt know at the time was from the place i was at gave me a free tow home, so i happily said goodnight to racq and had a fun journey back at 20-40km an hour with a trusty chain imbetween.
hopefully just a belt or something along those lines, car will turn on but when i was idling for a little while it did begin to overheat once, after that on way home being towed it was fine, except for steering which was still not to bad for manual

sounds like what happened when my harmonic balancer died, loss of power steer, no electrics, overheating... all that shit runs off the serpentine belt you see _________________

Had a similar thing happen with my old ride when the bearing on one of the pulleys went and the serpentine belt snapped. The steering became really heavy, heat was up, and battery wasn't charging.
I've heard that if you lose the harmonic balancer in a 2J it comes off with explosive force, you'll hear a lot of banging etc. Does anyone know if that's true? _________________

towed the car home?? ummm ... isn't that a no no with the auto??
very bad, if you ever have to do it, either do it in neutral with the car running, or pull the tailshaft out.

mine never actually came off, even though there was no rubber left, the belt tension held the outer ring on the centre bit. however if it were to slide off forward, then yes, the effects would be not-so-cool.. _________________
why not just get RACQ ultracare? its like $150 or something a year and you get 50k's worth of towing
it was $200 and they would tow me for 10km after that it would cost more. and yeh the car did lose power on way home, when wipers were set to full nearing home they were going quite slow. will pick up a battery charger from autobarn for the mean time.
it was towed with the car running in neutral. engine was idling and didnt overheat on way home.
am getting a new alloy harmonic balancer for $120 and a heavy duty timing belt for about $120 as well.
does anyone know of a business that does callouts to get timing done correctly once it has been fitted?
the belt never broke, just loose but either way it was screwed and im no mechanic so was oblivious to the dont tow an auto. if its dead its dead, the engine was still idling fine so all i can do is see how things pan out and hope for the best.

Hey mate, just in case you've never fitted one of these belts before remember the tensioner pulley needs to pushed down/rotated clockwise.
Don't get your finger(s) caught between the belt and the pullies as you will come out of it with significantly less skin and fingernails. _________________
