yep, but if it was sold in australia i believe the price would have been near $70k once you factor in tarrifs and all that. plus back then a brand new commodore was barely over $20k.

For interest's sake:

4.7m yen in Japan in 1991:
Japanese Exchange rate in Jan 1991 was 102.94
Thus making it $45,657 at the day.
I believe import taxes at the time were around 20% (pre-GST we had luxury tax for motor vehicles)
Assuming 20%, would've brought it to roughly $55k, plus we probably paid a premium for the priviledge -- final price maybe $60-65k
Then since then, CPI Index from Jan 1991->Dec 2007 = 1.513x increase

Makes it $90-95k in present-day money.
So basically it's a $100k car. >_<

my thoughts exactly rustyp, but i just did some research for comparison.

in 1991 the Skyline GTR in japan was 4,500,000 yen, almost the same price as the aristo. In australia nissan wanted $110k for the GTR.

The only difference being Jim Richards and Mark Skaife won Bathurst 1991-1992 in a Nissan Skyline. The same can't be said for the Toyota Aristo. Sad

maybe if we had the cars back in the day, the drivers might have been driven back to the hotel in one? well, they'd get there faster than those blokes in a VQ statesman or caprice anyway!

In 1991 import duty was 48.5% , and luxury car sales tax of any amount over $55K got slugged an extra 70%. So the price would have been a lot closer to the big gorilla. Smile
