have been looking around on import monster, but yet to buy anything. Was just wondering about the costs of getting things here. Have looked at things as small as turbo timers to things like rims. Would love to know from some peole who have purchased things through them , what they paid, for various sized items. And yer i know it explains on the site, but it wasn t real clear to me, i could be a bit slow on the up take though cheers

I haven't used the service but I thought it had an estimation built in _________________
"Everything is always okay in the end, if it's not okay, then it's not the end"
but its not entirely accurate.
i got some things shipped over by air, and import monster will refund or deduct the total cost once they post it.
usually its less than what the guestimate calculator says.
EMS/Air is charged on weight, container on volume, and Aussie courier on volumetric weight.
So we created 6 categories which cover most items, and with the right category chosen, it is pretty accurate, like tommee said it is usually conservative so you get money back

I agree.
The monster is great for more expensive items, however there have been quite a few cheaper things (sub $100) which I would have picked up if the additional costs werent so prohibotive. I guess most of it is out of their control however.

maybe so
but I don't see why they put GST on evrything including the
japanese domestic freight and the item purchased from japan
gst does not apply there
also when importing items less then $500 or $50 tax you
don't pay tax on them either
I have imorted heaps of dvds, car parts, and electrical items
and never once paid tax on them

You pay for it to an Australian company to an Australian bank account, therefore we are required by law to collect GST on the entire value of the purchase unfortunately - out of our hands that one and taxes are an unfortunate reality of doing business in Australia.
Goods coming in via the Australian postal system under $1000 will not have duties applied as they come through and we do not charge for Import Duty on items that are sent EMS because of this. Any goods arriving into Australia as part of a commercial shipment (ie, a container load of car parts being delivered to Import Monster) are liable for Import duty and Import GST. This is applied to the full japanese cost of the items and is paid to Customs before they will release the shipment, therefore we have to charge it. Honestly wish this wasn't the case, believe me!
I bring in heaps of stuff through EMS and never have to cop import duty or gst on them, that's because I pay the guy in Japan for them, not a local guy and the items are under $1000aud in value.

It just comes down to how bad you want it really There are things I've bought through IM because I can't get them anywhere else, but there are times when I can get something cheaper locally than I can through IM. Something small for example, a local seller would have bought in bulk and shipped via a cheaper method than EMS - therefore his overall costs for that item are probably 30% cheaper
But there are SO many things that work out heaps cheaper than local, or that you simply can't get anywhere else - it's those things that we really built the site for
