Hey guys

im stuck in a pickle here i have been offered a fully built bottom end for my car
and i dont know wether to take it or not the price is rather good and if i was to do
it i would re-con my head also so i will then have pretty much a fresh motor which is
pretty close to being bullit proof.

the only thing thats putting me off is the cost of it all up i have a had a quote of 2300 to take my old
motor out, pull my head off and send it away to be re-conditioned, bolt all my parts onto the new
block, buy a new head gasket, buy oil and filter, buy coolant, put the head back onto the motor,
put the new engine back into my car and then finally give it a tune.

just want to get peoples opinions on this does this seem like a good idea to do.

I have some issues with the car as it is which will be fixed with this new block but yeah just a hard choice to make.

cheers

It depends on your power goals I guess, but as we all know the 2j is built to last and can take push through a fair amount of power with minimal internal work. You just have to ask yourself whether or not you can justify the money for a built bottem end? If your goal is 600+hp I would say definetly, if not then spend the cash elsewhere

exactly. coz if you dont want a 600hp beast the id spend that 2300 to improve whatever the prob is with your car currently and im pretty sure this wont cost you the full 2300 which means you can spend the rest on something else like buying the work wheels that aristoman jamie is selling and send it over to me Razz
of if you dont feel the generous then i guess u mite save the rest

there is a third option of buying the stuff and selling it for a fair bit more either to one of the big boys on this site or on supra forums.com

going big in power means drivetrain upgrades or breakages too. depends on if it's a daily driver and whether or not it runs forged pistons. they're not exactly the smoothest upgrade and are harsh on the bores, cutting down the service life of the engine. but they are a brilliant piece of engineering.

Considering the 2JZ runs forged rods and pistons from factory you would hope that it does Very Happy

as far as i am aware mate the stock pistons are cast. i've definately been wrong before though. they are widely known as the best factory cast pistons made.

been doing some research. seems to be conflicting info on the factory pistons. some even calling semi forged. dunno. need a reliable source. nothing to do with the orignal topic though so i'll leave it now

factory forged mate. Wink

2300 is a good price, if your planning on spending another $10,000 everywhere else (diff, driveshaft, gearbox, exhaust, computer, turbo, manifold, injectors, pump, tank, intercooler) *did i forget anything else?!*

otherwise stick with the factory block and spend that cash straight on your gearbox. Its the weakest link, and you need to spend about 4000 to get a killer box going. Smile

yeah i have all the single turbo, ecu etc already and have a high stall and shift kit with cooler in my gear box already just is it worth spending that amount of money when i can probably only get another 50 - 70 rwhp out of the turbo.. and im not upgrading the turbo again im not that keen on a billion horse power as it is my daily work dirver so cant be to lethal and with th cops cracking down over here its getting harder to get away with this sort of stuff now.

either way the pro's amd con's are pretty even... just got to decide wether the money should be spent on the house or the car

cheers

Mate I wouldn't bother.
Spend the money else where.

I totally agree with what 2JUBBZ said.
Dont rebuilt until you need to. If the day comes when something happens to my engine I'd get another import 2J engine for a few grand that has either had a leak down or compression test and your all sweet again.
They can take big boost/power and a stock 2JZ is just about as good as a rebuilt engine IMHO.

Take my engine for example:
160,000klm, Compression tested 180 psi in all Clys, 110psi oil pressure, making close to the 700hp mark at the engine driven everyday.
There are a few Supra's making 700 ATW on stock bottom ends.
Seriously you would be better to spend it else where. (as good of a deal it is)
Spend the money on the house.
My 2.2 cents. Cool

Put them money back into house being if you play your cars right the outlay will reap divends in the future with property...Have had good fortune with property over the yrs.

Cars you can always comeback to Ash and in anycase arent you selling the car ?

Scenario sell car put money into house then sit on a few yrs then comeback to cars later...Exactly what i did for 5yrs & couldnt be happier.
