does this look like a stainless steel exhaust to you?

if so, how old do you think it is? how many KM's do you think the car has done with this exhaust?

Stainless won't corrode like that. I'm guessing they've made a mistake.

was meant to be 316 stainless piping.

unfortunately I've lost the paper work from the place that did it!

car has done about 15,000kms with that exhaust, been on there about 12 months.

here's another pic...

it didn't when it was brand new, it was just as shiny as the mufflers.

the thing is, its very very magnetic, just as much so as mild steel.

while the mufflers aren't magnetic at all, and nor is my stainless turbo manifold...

I did, it was bright, shiny stainless steel, was just as shiny as the mufflers.

I hadn't noticed it was rusting till a few weeks ago, its been on the car for a year.

It can't be straight mild steel, do they put a galvanisation on to stop the rust...or is it a very low grade SS?

I think its a horribly low grade of stainless, which rusts, and is magnetic.

if he had knowingly used mild steel, he surely would have painted it...

It looks like 409 stainless to me which does not retain its bright finish like 304, 316 or 321 but is widely used in the exhaust industry and even as original fitment from most car manufacturers.

Another way you can tell it is stainless is by the grained finish which you don't see in mild steel or aluminised pipe but overall it will still have about the same life span - it just doesn't look as nice.

I'd be more concerned about the "Press" bends restricting the flow than the grade of stainless that its made from - mandrel bends would have been my preferred option if it were my money.

How much did you pay anyway and for how much of the exhaust system (cat back or front pipe included)?

I didn't realise I was getting press bends, rather than mandrel, and didn't even realise it at first! which also annoys me.

its cat back, I paid $800 (I think) for piping, and labour, I sourced, and supplied the mufflers and resonators myself.

$800 for pipe and labour for a catback system is a bit steep as it would have only taken about 2 to 3 hours in a workshop with a hoist.

Here's a couple of pics of a freebie system I'm putting together for my son-in-law's TT Soarer...

Pipe is worth about $100 max, mufflers and high flow cat he supplied.

I'm in the wrong business I think - after talking to my son-in-law he tells me he was quoted $2200 Suprised for a custom made cat back system so $800 minus the mufflers doesn't seem so bad compared to that.

Wife wants a system on the Aristo too now after hearing the one on the Soarer Cool

I was quoted $1800 cat back, with no resonators, just rear mufflers.

so I went elsewhere, sourced the mufflers and resonators myself, and got it done for about $1300 total, with the resonators.
