I'm absolutely shatered, I tell you........
Those beautiful 19" Autocouture rims I got from Aaron, is illegal here in Queensland! Icould have the car registered only if I go back to standard rims! Just bought brand new Nexen tyres 245/35 and 275/30 hoping it would go through the roadworthy. Not a chance.
My insurance will be null and void if I smash into someone. The cops will fine me everytime they see me!
Shit! Anyway, I'm now considering selling the rims and going back to standard. I can't believe I just said that!

I'd say pretty much any 19" wheels are technically illegal anywhere in australia on a car which came with stock 16"s... ridiculously. which sucks big time, but I have heard from various people that changes are in the works for the end of this year, in SA at least... wait and see I suppose.

is this the "wheels are too big" law coming into affect? its actually law here in nz too, your wheels are allowed to be custom but only if the rolling diameter of the wheel & tire is the same as factory, e.g. a 19" rim with a 40 profile tire is the same rolling diameter as a 16" rim with a 60 profile tire. (or whatever... you get the drift. Cops stopped trying to enforce it here as there is no documented record as to what size wheels the car is supposed to have on it available when they pull ya over.
as for width, the top of the wheel must be in line with the body of the vehicle. e.g. it must tuck under. _________________
Running a ten second quarter mile in a honda is like coming out of the closet.. You might feel good, but at the end of the day your still gay.
They *should* be legal if you get them within the 15mm of the original rolling diameter...
It used to be that you could only go up 2inches in size (eg. if car came with 16s, you could only go to a max of 18inch).. but it was then changed that u could go up whatever size, as long as the rubber you get is still within 15mm of the original rolling diameter... which sometimes can be tricky, cause the smaller profile tyres don't always have the load ratings required..
If i make sense! _________________

always best to go back to complete or near stock as possible to clear rego/inspections etc.
that way there is less for them to pick, even if it is simple shit like wheel size/diameter.
my car cleared inspection the other week, and i made sure it was all stock and mickey mouse before i went through. stock wheels, tint off, cleaned the engine bay, had it running and looking mint so they couldnt pick anything.

As far as I'm aware, in South Australia the last time this was updated was in 2003, and it's still the same... max of 2"s up in size, within 15mm of rolling diameter. Can anyone confirm/deny this for me, because I'm looking for wheels at the moment and it will influence my decision.
the specific section you want to read is section 4.2 on page 14 of that document.
however, in saying that pay attention to this clause:
Quote:
Certain jurisdictions will need to make changes to their administrative arrangement in order to fully implement the NCOP. Prospective constructors or modifiers should contact the jurisdiction in which a vehicle is to be registered or modified to determine the most up to date information about the business rules or transitional arrangements that may be in force.
best to contact your state service to finalise the exact rules. an idea would be to get them to fax to you a copy of the latest for your state.

Here in Vic as long as the load rating of the tyres matches the placard and the overall rolling diameter is no more than +/- 15mm from stock, you're fine. In practice, the cops check the load rating and whether you have tread and that's it.
Stock rims to get through rego is the only way to fly.
Brent, don't give the wheels away man - do your due diligence first, but just borrow some stockies for rego!

Thanks for the support guys!
Aaron, I'm a happily married man but, I could pull any chick with those wheels if I really wanted to!
I actually went to the fools at Queensland transport office. Spoke to an actual inspector, whom then referred me to the transport compliance office in Maryborough, because she did not know the rules off-hand. I then made telephonic contact.
Shockingly, the bloke I spoke to, who was a transport official, was not sure of the rules himself!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Can you believe this shit!!!!!!!!!!!
So, I went to measure the circumference of the stock spare, and the 19". It turns out to be the same! So, I go back to Hervey Bay office and ask for booklet on modifications. It is exactly as some of you explained about sizing and rating!
So then I contact my mechanic who's supposed to do the roadworthy and safety certificate! Really lovely bloke (couldn't believe the car was 12 years old)
I, a non-resident of Australia then explains to him my findings. He agrees and tells me that he will now contact Qld transport to confirm what I've said. He called back 1 hour ago. He will be issuing the certificate and roadworthy after all!
My erection is now starting to hurt, I've had it for just over an hour!
I'm going to use a mates stock wheels for the rego-inspection anyway. They really force one to be deceitful. _________________

the old 'no more than 2" bigger rule' i think is still the go over here in WA too, but fucked if i can make head or tail of the documentation on the website. i hung on the phone for over 2hrs in total trying to talk to someone in the tech department with no luck so i have just ordered my wheels.
the thing is it isnt only the overall diameter, there are stipulations on width too, as well as track increase (so that means offset) as well as tyre size (e.g. stretched tyres = bad)
I would say the general concensus is just take them off for any kind of pit inspection and then just hope you dont get pulled over. the cops wont always pull you over if theyre just 19s caus ethey dont like absolutely huge when on so i wouldnt stress too much.
just watch out with the purple police in qld. my wheels are illegal due to width and offset and has been inspected several times but the purple police let me off because they like the car and its a cruiser. there is writings regarding width but they are stupid.
eg is off the top of my head i can legally increase my tyre size to 285 but not have a rim wide enough so the tyre would buldge. i will try and find the rulings as i have the 40mb pdf document somewhere at work. _________________

Man, those purple police scare me more than the average ones. Purple police (dept of transport inspectors) are all trained mechanics as far as I know, and if they decide to defect a car, they tend to get them for absolutely everything. The blue&reds generally don't know what they're talking about, but the purple ones...

we have them here also dude, they have purple lights and you will only really see them on fri sat nights cruising around
we have purple here, but they are hardcore EPA officers. if anything is worse than the traffic management cop units, its the EPA guys. get done by them and your car may never see the road again!
