Whilst looking around the web at various Japanese export sites I came across a site with some tables of information regarding the types of cars and numbers currently being exported from Japan. Here's a small section of that information, translated from the data.
Where do you think Australia might sit in terms of volume of cars imported? The import scene here is pretty big you might think and we'd be near the top in terms of numbers!
Think again, we are near the bottom. Countries that beat us include Cyprus, Peru, Bangladesh and Mongolia. Between January and June, 2007, according to the iATA, we ranked 22nd.
Here's the list:
Russian Federation - 216,667
U.A.E. - 63,247
NZ - 53,061
Chile - 46,665
South Africa - 20,255
Kenya - 18,821
Philippines - 18,821
U.K. - 13,126
Pakistan - 13,003
Singapore - 11,588
Peru - 10,748
Malaysia - 9,919
Sri Lanka - 8,815
Uganda - 8,593
Mongolia - 8,593
Cyprus - 6,735
U.S.A. - 6,531
Suriname - 6,046
Bangladesh - 5,988
Jamaica - 5,622
Tanzania - 5,554
Australia - 4,618
Dominican Rep. - 4,559
Thailand - 4,463
Ireland - 4,132
Most Exported Manufacturer
According to the same statistics, the manufacturer most exported (by a huge margin) is Toyota but this could be a symptom of the fact that Toyota has more models and model variants than any of the other manufacturers. Numbers are for 2006.

The only reason is we are at the bottom because of some ridiculous importing laws we have here, say Russian Federation doesnt have any except for tax based on the size of the engine of the car you are importing plus minimum compliancing rules. Easy to import whatever you want. The other thing its very close to major car manufacturing countries. _________________

yeah the laws here are quit tight, i would imagine we would be quite low. we have pretty strong laws to protect our local auto industry so it isnt that surprising to me (though we must have racked up a few imports before the 15yr rule was closed haha)
