Hey folks, having never been an owner of an auto car, I am wondering what is the best thing to do for the car at traffic lights, to leave the car in D and keep your foot on the brake? or put it back into neutral and then back into drive when the lights change back?
I always just had the assumption that keeping your foot on the brake cant be good, since the car is still trying to move-i.e. bad for gearbox and brakes etc??
But moving the gear back into Drive from Neutral makes the car lunge forward, so i wouldnt think that would be good either??

Always left it in D. On the odd occasion I have popped it back into N, I have forgotten by the time the lights change and almost rolled into the car behind me.
personally i only have done this in this car as u have to push quiet hard for the car to stay still and since u dont have to push the button to move the stick into neutral. Yes i am pretty sure it would be better for everything if it is in neutral also if the car infront is a manual u can just roll back straight away if he starts rolling with out hesitating. I dont always do it, i'm just lazy

pull up next to an XR6T... pop it into neutral... give it a few revs... pop it back into D and stall it up... floor the happy pedal and hold the f**k on
I usually pop it into neutral if the AC is on coz the revs are raised and it feels like its straining against the brakes more. otherwise i leave it in D _________________

Every time you shift from N to D, a clutch has to soak up some torque. Doing this is unnecessary and will reduce the life (even if only marginally) of your auto. Told to me by two auto service type people.

I usually do but many times i forget to put it back in D and i rev the engine while going no where and look like a tool. But after reading that up there ^ i think I will leave it in D from now on. _________________
When I first switched from a manual to an auto, it was just a habit to put the car into neutral at the lights. Then I felt that the lunges the car makes when u switch back to D do not seem good for the car so now I just leave it at D.

Why is there a neutral anyway? Why wouldn't there just be a park, drive and 1st & 2nd gears?
so u can tow the car
I dont think you are ment to tow a rwd auto car with the rear wheels on the ground. As it can kill an auto gear box. I think neutral is there to be able to push it around your driveway. _________________
lol.. i was gonna put it in neutral from now on coz i thought it would take the load off the engine to save petrol..
as auto always put a load on the engine and manual doesnt..
guess i'll be leaving it in D.. want my tranny to last me a while

i dont think it matters if its auto or manual... yeah maybe if you decide to go around australia with your caravan the stock auto box would not like that!
pretty sure that 1st and 2nd sections are for if you are towing (not for lapping round a bouts) heheheh
the whole point that neutral is there is for emergency resons like chris's _________________
