Japanese Translation Software

Fujitsu ATLAS V13

If you are having trouble with some of the translation engines built into GOOGLE, or Firefox then you might want to try Fujitsu ATLAS V13.

It installs in IE v6 or higher, translates quickly via a huge dictionary (you can go English-->Japanese, or reverse), has it's own menu bar for easy access to translate any Japanese web page in seconds, or you can use the standalone version with Adobe Acrobat, or Word (amongst others).

You need a reasonably quick PC with lots of RAM (at least 1GB) and heaps of HD space. I found it took 2-3 goes at installing to get it to work on my PC with 1GB RAM. Even then I had to shut down all unnecessary programs and processes to make it work.

After you install set it to translate JP --> Eng in the menubar, and if it attempts to but gives an error you've not got enough memory allocated. I shut down QuickTime, and anything sitting in the lower right menubar. And now it works fantastic. Very, very quick.

You have the option of doing manual translations (I wait for the Japanese to load first, then hit the "Translation" button) or autotranslate, which I don't recommend as it will try to translate every page you go to, Japanese or not.

This package retails for about $1000 for the full version. You can install a 30 day full working trial from this link:

Browsing Yahoo Auctions was never easier.

Cheers,

Peter

Whilst you are right my dear, one thing you will notice is that after the translation (via say AltaVista Babelfish) you no longer see the original page but a translated page. With ATLAS it gives you the translation directly in the original webpage. Especially good when doing web commerce. Cool

Cheers,

Peter

Meh..... have fun spending 1k on that - when you can get google to do it good enough for nothing Smile

Or how about - just take japanese classes..... you'll get more out of it in the end.. and probably end up costing about the same!!

Very Happy

Have been doing one of those "Listen and learn" courses in Japanese from the local library - you know, a phrasebook, and two audio CDs, where you listen, then practice. At the rate I'm picking it up should only take about 5 years to master it. But it doesn't teach you to read Japanese! Smiley

Cheers,

Peter
