I went to my local Toyota dealership today, Galleria Toyota in Morley, to grab an oil filter and red coolant. They wanted $39 for the filter, the larger D4 one, and $55 for 4L of coolant. The filter prices seems a bit high, I've seen people say $23 on here, the coolant I dunno if that's a good price or not.

Did I just manage to find a particulary expensive dealer or is $39 now the standard list price? Is there anywhere in Perth that will do them cheaper?

Ryco Z418 is about $12-13 from Supercheap from memory - Ive changed mine a billion odd times and never had a problem. Wait until they have 15 or 20% off storewide and buy bulk (same with Castrol Edge 5W 30).

Yep, the toyota red coolant is exxy but you need to run it. Only need to change about every 2 years though so not too bad.

Same goes with the toyota genuine auto trans fluid - exxy but necessary (yep Ive opened up that can of worms again Very Happy ) Yep and you need close to 12L from memory.

Read the eleventy billion threads on why using genuine trans and coolant fluids is the go - not worth risking it IMO, pay the extra for the piece of mind.

Because Toyota's specifically 2jzgte's have a different boiling rate than other engines and if you Don't use Toyota Red coolant ya run the risk of Head Warpage, Overheating, Busted head gasket and other lovely issues. Green coolant doesn't have the boiling point rating that Toyota red does and I'd rather not risk it Plus ya save cash anyway it last a bloody longtime, Compared to Green Which I used to Flush out every 12 months

Id like to see where you found that info? Sounds like a load of you know what to me... Though I am willing to be proven wrong, havent you noticed that all the car manufacturers like to say you need to run toyota genuine oils or honda genuine brake fluid, nissan genuine coolant these days? Its because they charge a permium for the stuff that they buy in bulk at very cheap prices and make lots of money!!!! Also means that the everyday person is more likely to just take there car back to the dealer for servicing, which means they make even more money again..... I run the green stuff in mine and it has had countless floggings and not once even hinted at getting hot. I just change my coolant every 6 months. If you want to have a performance oreintated car be prepared to maintain it more frequently I say.

Toyota Red has an anti-corrosion additive that's specifically designed for the composition in Toyota blocks.

The Glycol found in Green fluid actually causes corrosion. It should not be used under any circumstances with our engines.

C2H6O2 + H2O + 2FeC -->. Fe2O3 + C4H8

Ethylene Glycol + Water + Cast Iron --> Iron(III) Oxide + Butene(g)

Hahaha ill take my chances, with the corosive green stuff lol. Im sure I would see some signs of said corrosion when I drop my coolant if it was infact happening at any alarming rate (which would prob still take 50yrs to seriously damage your block). But as it stands my coolant come's out looking pretty much as it did when I mixed it up before I put it in. If there was any real damage being done I would expect to see somthing changing in the coolant, discolouration coolant going brown, flakey looking shit ect;.

For what it's worth my research suggests every coolant uses a glycol base, except for the very old style coolants such as the boron based ones, the difference between products is in the additives and the dye they add. As chappo pointed out glycol on its own is corrosive so various corrossion inhibitors are required, these are typcially phosphorous, silicon or potassium based. The difference between red and green coolant could be the newer organic additives? I'll see if Toyota will give me the MSDS when I grab some which will give a few clues as to what's in it.

$6 genuine Toyota oil filters here. Probably not worth ordering on their own but would be worth adding to a larger order. I might grab some, does anyone else in Perth want me to order some for them and share shipping?
