I stopped by Edward Lee's Imported Cars on Parramatta Road this afternoon as they had a blue JZS147 in the front yard. It was clean and tidy, and fairly standard.

I told the salesperson I'd rather a black one. He said they just got one in "off the boat" and took me to the workshop to have a look.

http://www.japaneseautocentre.com.au/zoom.php?id=50#

Well, you can imagine my disappointment after seeing a genuine 202 black, with nice exhaust, coilovers and deep dish wheels (with a few kerbside rashes) when I open the passenger door and I'm immediately overwhelmed by the smell of stale tobacco. Sad

So I said to the salesperson "This car was owned by a smoker".

He says, "Oh, How can you tell?"

I thought he was joking. It was obvious.

He offered to lower the price from $18,999 but I wasn't interested any further.

There is no way you can disguise "that" smell. Bawling

Did anyone else here buy a car that was obviously owned by a smoker?

PS. The photo of the rim is the only good one - the others all have some form of gutter rash, including one that has a sizable chunk out of it.

Cheers,

Peter

No, not possible. Tobacco smoke embeds itself in the fibres of the cloth, the carpet and the roof lining.

I once drove a car that had been driven by a chain smoker, and I almost threw up when I got in it. It had been detailed at least six times by different companies in an effort to get rid of the smell.

Cheers,

Peter

PS. What possesses people to spray complete engine bays with silicone (in an effort to make everything look new)?

The tyres on that car were old - you could see the cracks on the rubber near the rim edge through the tyre black.

Almost every car I've had out of Japan was owned by a smoker, these cars were the domain of wealthy businessmen in their day and almost all of them smoke.

I pull the seats out and my detailer steam cleans and deodorises the whole car and has these magic cans of foam that he puts through the aircon system. Ciggy smell gone Smile

As an ex smoker, I can smell cigarette smoke a mile away now - I'm the worst kind of non smoker because of that, I just hate it now.

Yep I wouldn't go knocking a car back because of that - just factor in that it will cost you several hundred to get rid of the smell.

In addition to what Aaron has mentioned, I removed the console of my Soarer and found ash everywhere - and once I vacuumed that out it was fine.

My Aristo still stinks, and the air-puri filter is black, but it did have the optional lavender pod Smile

I have been dying to get the car detailed, which will be done after I take it off the road shortly for some goodies.

Considered importing yourself Peter? Your really paying a premium to be able to see the car here. Although advantageous to see the car before you buy, you could save several thousand importing yourself, even after fixing any minor issues.

I saw that blue one at Edward Lee's today, it does look pretty clean. I like the black one coz it has the extra's like the nice rims.

Hey People! I bought the Black Aristo. They did advertise it as a non
smokers car, but you can tell straight away. I bought the car as is.
Needs a bit of work, but nothing to bad. I didnt get it detailed either.
Ive seen too many cars wrecked from someone not knowing how to
use a buffer properly. As for the inside, i know a detailer who has some
machine thats ment to get the ciggarette smell out of the car.
Wether it works or not is a different story tho. Pics will be up in the
Members Rides section at a later date, after i get it tidied up. My brother
works at a Smash Repairer. Got a nice exhaust system too. Very Happy

So after two weeks of ownership ...

What are your impressions?

How successful were you in limiting the stale tobacco smell in that car?

I'm curious. Confused

Cheers,

Peter

Well in all honesty, the smell is still there! I havent tried to remove
it tho! I have hardly driven the car, and im getting it fully serviced just
for peace of mind. On that note, ill be sorting it out, (For the car to be cleaned
inside) which should get rid of the smell. I'll be doing that today....

So obviously youve never been to a propper detailer then? My mate owns a detailing workshop, and his cars come out bloody awesome, when buffed.

I know people that have purchased cars from Dealers, and when they went to pick the car up, the paint looked pretty average, because the detailer didnt know what they were doing. I know a Detailer, and he has done a sweet job on all my cars, so i just let him do it.....

Smoke smell is gone. Car detailers spray some funky deoderiser thing in all the vents and Leave the Air Con on and use some machine to get rid of the smell. 1 month later still smells good! Not sure if there is a filter for the Aircon, and wether or not it needs replacing tho......
