Hey all,
Ive noticed that my aristo is easily prone to neutral/liftoff and brake oversteer. This has become quite evident recently with all the wet weather we've been having in brissie.
Put it simply, i am suprised at the amount of 'momentum' (no accelerator) oversteer that occurs, especially at slow speed in wet/damp road conditions, even with traction control on (I realize there's a difference between TC and stability control but still)!
Dont get me wrong, there is nothing i like doing more than getting a rwd car sideways, but the oversteer can often be unexpected. I remember once sliding around 1/3 of the moggill road round about in indrooroopilly (its quite a large 3 lane triangle shape) in full traffic conditions on a damp road! Ive had many slow and high speed cases similar to this and I would hate to think if what might happen to someone else was driving the car who hasnt had a decent wack of experience sliding a 180sx.
The car has an LSD that i am told is from factory and my tires aren't the greatest. However, does anyone else notice this phenomena?
haha, funny you should mention this, i had my first (in the aristo) throttle off oversteer (or dynamic drift as keiichi tsuchiya calls it )
was coming round this notoriously bumpy corner (left on north lake road from south st), was coming in much quicker than i know i should of, hard on the brakes, got to a speed that was too quick for the tight left into the first lane(3 lane road), no throttle, bumps unsettled the back end, got massively sideways, quick countersteer and all was well...
havent had any understeer in the car and have put it pretty hard into the corners, i can feel the sidewalls flexing, but havent experienced any understeer, Toyo Proxes 4 on the front are good, if i had them on the back i dont think it would of throttle off oversteered around that particular corner....
but that particular poll option "throttle-off oversteer in the dry" isnt there, so i havent polled yet!
theres quite a few things u can do to help induce understeer, if you wish to go down that route _________________
i did a small feint motion drift in my twin turbo and it ended up being a crazy across 2 lanes sideways oversteer moment, in the rain. i just stepped out lol _________________

First time I got any real no-throttle oversteer was a few days after I got my swaybars and drift pineapples intstalled. My Aristo doesn't seem as tail-happy as some, with hard shitty 255 Nankangs on the back. I wouldn't want to drive one with 235 rears on it in the wet.

235s in the wet will be better than 255s because there is more pressure be exerted on the contact patch, which means less chance of aquaplaning...tyre type, width, tread pattern also all factor in....but saying a 235 would be scarier in the wet makes no sense _________________

haha u sure about this.. coz i was gunning it in a straight line and managed to get it sideways at about 120 , coz of my stupid shift kit,
I doubt this was in the dry.
I'm sick people carrying on about shift kits as if it turns every car into a drift monster. If your spring rates are to high and your shocks are wound up to hard of course you will skate on shitty nankang/triangle taiwanese tyres.

I don't think I've ever gone sideways at anywhere near 100km/h from kickback, shitty tyres and hard coilovers included. Granted I only have a stage 1. It chirps gears, that's about it.

Hey guys so just an update I replaced the stock tires with a set of 18/235/35 front and 18/265/35 rears and the excessive oversteer is gone. Also my stereo in the boot probably weighs 40kg atm. Also put in coilies set to low and hvnt had a chance to wheel align yet.
Anyways I have waaay more traction in the rear and it has noticeably more (normal) understeer. Its not as fun but its how i want my aristo to behave =P

Haha yeah i noticed that both camber and toe was le fuct. I wanted to wait a few days for the height to settle so i can adjust it and when i rock up to align the wheels at the height i want
